Skincare Favourites - Uma Oil and Pai Skincare | Review

03:49

Do you have products that you love and no matter how many innovations and "miracle" ingredients the skincare market comes up with, for you they remain a gold standard and a permanent resident in your stash? Today I wanted to share my all time favourites.

Uma Deeply Clarifying Face Oil

Uma company is built on founder's family generations of Ayurvedic knowledge and wisdom. Their products have been trialled and tested by time and thousands of customers. Uma's botanicals are grown in their own family estate and only the most prime are harvested, processed and bottled. Truly farm-to-face approach! Uma is also very much about girl power where at least 50% of workers are locally employed women, receiving equal pay to their male colleagues.

The first time I heard of this company was I was watching one of Teri Miyahira's videos who gave the most glowing review. Although Teri and I have pretty much the opposite skin types (Teri has dry skin, whereas I have oily) Uma's range has a variety of oils suited for different skin needs. I was quick to check them out however the price was very much breathtaking - 30ml face oil comes at £98-135. I had to wait for some kind of offer to come up before I got my bottle.

I decided to go for Deeply Clarifying Face Oil (RPP £98). The bottle I have is the older version, the new design features more uniform cylindrical shape with a black pipette and floral motif on the bottle. In my humble opinion, the new design is simply beautiful however I like the functionality of the tear-drop shape when it comes to picking up the oil when the pipette can no longer reach the bottom. Maybe it is still very possible to achieve with the new bottle, the time will tell.

The deeply clarifying face oil has a single base oil - grapeseed oil. It has a comedogenic score of 1/5 (0 is least and 5 is the most comedogenic) which makes it a fantastic choice for breakout-prone complexions. It is also rich in anti-inflammatory vitamin E. Grapeseed oil has very light texture, making it absorb like a dream without leaving behind a greasy feeling. It has been further infused with antibacterial and astringent clove, tea tree and clary sage essential oils, anti-inflammatory orange essential oil and balancing lavender essential oil. The facial oil promises to tackle breakouts from different direction yet it is gentle and moisturising enough so the skin will not become over-dried.

I absolutely adore how light this oil feels on my skin. This consistently been one of my favourite night oils, however, owing to its non-greasy finish I can also say it is suitable for daytime wearing. The reason why I prefer to use it at night is that I want to get the maximum benefits. In addition, applying this facial oil is the whole sensory experience - I put around 5 drops of oil into my palm, rub my hands together and pat around my face. Then I like to make a cup of my palms and bring them to my nose, inhaling the divine aroma of skilfully blended essential oils. Nothing will get wasted, the excess will also be patted on the neck (nobody wants a saggy neck!) and the rest will be massaged into my hands. Even though the oil is very light, I still found it to be very moisturising. It is perfect for summer time, however, those with combination skin types might want to alternate this facial oil with something else over winter.

Pai Skincare Rosehip Bioregenerate Rapid Radiance Mask

I have written about Pai before and I am very happy with this company's approach and ethics. Pai has 2 kaolin based masks in its range (both are 75ml for £30.00 plus one muslin cloth). Unlike the majority of clay masks, these have been formulated with nourishing oils which means your skin will not become over-dried during the treatment.

I will start with everyone's favourite - Rosehip Bioregenerate Rapid  Radiance Mask. This mask is targeted for dry, dull and sensitive skin requiring some 'pick-me-up'. It has rich orange colour due to Pai infamous rosehip oil packed full of omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 as well as carotenoids which help prevent oxidative damage of the skin. Strawberry leaf extract also acts to refine and illuminate the skin.

I like to use this mask at the end of the week and it is very suitable for a pampering session paired up with a bubble bath. This mask makes my skin very soft due to its moisturising ingredients. I also like to use this mask before an important event or any time I want my skin to look its absolute best because it calms down my skin, purifies and nourishes. I have oily skin however I did not experience any breakouts or bad reaction towards this mask. It seems to be a good option for dry skin types too due to its high oil content.

Next, Copaiba Deep Cleanse AHA Mask which is targeted towards oily / combination / blemished skin. Copaiba, which is also found in the blemish serum, works by targeting inflammation and bacteria, helping to normalise the skin. Alpha Hydroxy Acid (or AHA) comes from pink pomelo which is a natural and gentle alternative for people who cannot tolerate harsh acid masks. AHA works by dissolving the glue which holds the skin cells together on the surface, making the skin more smooth and refined. Due to this action, be careful to apply sun protection when you are staying outside when using this and any other acid treatment (mask, toner, serum etc.) because there is a risk of sunburn.

I found this mask to be very gentle. It did not give me stinging or burning sensation when applied or washed away. There was also no peeling of my skin or dry patches. My skin was left resurfaced, smooth and nourished which is very different to other acid based masks I have used before. Personally I would have liked this mask to be more strong in terms of its action (or more like a miracle which would get rid of all of my black spots and giant pores) however it is very kind to my skin and after using this mask I do not feel like my skin was insulted or traumatised hence I am still very happy with it.

I like to use these mask consecutively - first I would use Copaiba mask to refine and remove the dead cells, wash off and then apply Bioregenerate mask which will be able to carry the moisture deeper into the skin. Alternatively you can you a targeted approach - apply Copaiba mask to your oily/ blemished areas and Bioregenrate mask to the rest of the face / dry patches. The muslin cloth (not shown) which comes with each mask is dampened and then used to wash off the mask. It is the same cloth as included with Pai Cleanser.

Both of the masks are meant to be left on for 8 to 10 minutes however because these are so gentle and moisturising I leave them on for 20 minutes. If you have sensitive skin you might want to start with 10 and work your way up if your skin is OK with this.

Overall I really like this pair which work very well and keep my skin happy during the temperamental winter weather. Do you have any products that you swear by? Let me know in the comments!
