Confessions of tea addict. Part 1 - teapigs
20:33
Hello guys, apologies for a very long break
in my blog. But without further adue, let’s jump straight to the topic we’re
here for!
Happy teapigs family |
For those of you who haven’t seen my
Youtube videos, I am a big fan of teas. I mean, I love teas so much I don’t
have enough space on two shelves for all of them so I have to store some in my
room (I am also a big hoarder which doesn’t make my job of keeping things tidy
any easier). In the past I used to be rather unpretentious when it came to
‘having a cuppa’ after a meal – drop any bag of tea with a splash of hot water
and some sugar for sweetness (it’s all about sweet life!) and I will be
happy. Nowadays, I got way more
demanding with the choice of tea, so my safe bet when I’m on the go or visiting
someone is coffee. From cheapest and suspicious looking dust to finest Arabica
I can drink coffee in any form. In contrast, only tea of adequate quality would
satisfy me.
My favourite brand of tea has long been
teapigs. I can’t even remember how I first stumbled across this company but the
first time I have tried this tea was in London when I came to eat in Beetroot
Café (great place with affordable prices). I was blown away by the freshness of
peppermint tea (it was like chewing half a pack of gum)! I know, such freshness
is not for everyone (including me) but such strength of flavor is truly
impressive. On the plus side, the abundance of flavor allows me to brew one tea
bag twice, which makes this tea more affordable (the majority of flavours can
be purchased loose too). Tea is available
in 15 pyramids per bag (£3.99-£5.25), 50 pyramids (£9.95-£16.50), 2 pyramids
(sample set of £1.30) and loose, as well as different bundles and sets. Teapigs
website has an exhaustive description of each of their 31 flavours so I will
allow myself to just focus on the key details of teas I have tried so far.
These tins are sold with 20 pyramids inside |
Black tea
darjeeling earl grey tea
Tea made with black tea, cornflowers and
natural bergamot flavor, which looks truly mesmerising with adorable blue
flowers. However, I am too used to citrusy bergamot flavor of earl grey I
didn’t fully appreciate this tea since it lacks this zest. This tea has
excellent reviews on the website so don’t get discouraged by my unappreciation.
earl grey strong
With blue bulldog on the packet and
ingredient list of Black tea, cornflowers, natural bergamot flavour with other
natural flavourings and natural lime flavour, I hoped this tea would quench my
desire for bergamot flavor. Unfortunately, just like the previous tea, it did
not satisfy my expectations. Again, just like previous tea, it has excellent
reviews. Sometimes knowing exactly what you want is not a blessing.
chai tea
First tried this mix of black tea,
cinnamon, ginger, cassia, cardamom pods, natural cinnamon flavor and vanilla
when teapigs kindly popped a sample with my order. Strangely, I have never
tried chai so my way to make is to pour half a (drinking) cup of coconut milk
and half cup of water into a pan, add chai tea and let it simmer for a few
minutes, while steering this goodness. From previous knowledge (and helpful
instructions on the packets) I added sugar to my chai and enjoyed my drink.
Since I don’t have anything to compare it with, I was fully satisfied with the
flavor. Again, excellent reviews on the official website.
chocolate flake tea
Oh, you evil genius who thought of
combining chocolate and tea! Made from black tea, cocoa beans, chocolate flakes
and natural flavor, this tea is very much a yum and excellent ‘pick me up’!
Green tea
mao feng green tea
Excellent tea. Were you waiting for me to
say something else? Just try this tea and it will speak for itself. One tip
though, don’t use boiling water because it will make your tea sour.
green tea with mint
Another bomb combination when you can have
them both! Excellent for lovers of green tea and peppermint who also tend
to be indecisive in the morning – when you want some caffeine boost but also
fresh breeze and a happy tummy.
jasmine pearls tea
Oh, my ultimate indulgence! And being
almost the most expensive tea from teapigs selection, you can whisper “my dear”
to your freshly made cuppa when you curl up on the sofa (let your significant
other think you’re referring to them ;) )
popcorn tea
I first came across this tea during my
aimless wondering at the capital when I stumbled across a health shop. Hefty
price tag for 15 pyramids didn’t allow me to purchase it until I found a
suitable offer online. My high expectations of tasting cinema treat as
afternoon drink were unfortunately crushed. I didn’t like the odd taste of this
drink made from green tea and toasted rice however excellent reviews on the
official website make me think there are plenty of those with pleased
tastebuds.
Guess what tea I am drinking here? |
Herbal tea
chamomile tea
Simple yet charming, excellent drink before
bedtime. Watching the flowers (not crushed!) brew is as calming as drinking
chamomile tea.
honeybush & rooibos tea
Made from honeybush and rooibos (if the
title hasn’t given away the contents yet) this gentle cup is excellent at any
point and for any occasion! The only downside is that some of the small leaves
tend to seep through my tea infuser (what a cheek!)
liquorice and peppermint tea
I have strong dislike towards liquorice
(again, for those who isn’t familiar with my Youtube channel) however my friend
is an avid lover. I gave him a bag of 50 pyramids of this tea and he was over
the moon with it.
peppermint tea
In case you’ve missed the beginning of this
post, this tea is super strong! But be sure to keep it airtight, overtime that
lovely taste of peppermint will vanish!
pure lemongrass tea
This tea is sweet enough for me to drink
without adding sugar or syrup. I like it before bedtime – ticks of boxes for
being caffeine-free and having pleasant citrus flavor!
spiced winter red tea
Don’t be tricked by the title, this tea
made from rooibos, flavours, orange peel, gingko, orange blossom, cinnamon,
ginger root, cloves and safflower can be drunk all year round! I like this tea
because it has charming taste of spices without adding heat.
super fruit tea
Hibiscus, elderberries, currants, blackcurrants,
natural flavouring, cranberries, blueberries and none of that over-perfumed
taste of cheap fruit tea. My local Pizza Express serves this tea too.
yerba mate
Described as “smoky green tea” however it
didn’t quite float my boat. Plenty of 5 star reviews though!
apple & cinnamon tea
Packed with apple, cinnamon, apple pomace,
roasted chicory root, citric acid, sweet blackberry leaves and natural
flavourings this tea is described as “perfect combination for a lovely fruity,
punchy and spicy tea” and I will second every word. Unfortunately this pyramid
cannot be brewed more than once but I have noticed this is the case for every
apple tea.
chocolate & mint tea
Just like my favourite ice cream, it’s too
good to be true/tea! Cocoa husk, peppermint, chocolate chips, (sugar, cocoa,
emulsifier: soya lecithin), natural cacao flavouring, natural peppermint
flavouring. Oh, and it’s vegan too! This tea is perfection but be careful,
others will quickly understand the beauty of this cuppa too. A visiting friend
of my flatmate kept picking the box of these from my shelf which made me both
proud (obviously I have a great taste) and annoyed (I mean, have you seen the
price tag!).
